# Policies

> Define runtime and business governance policies for access, masking, retention, and related controls.

**Policies** document rules your organization applies to data: access, masking, retention, privacy, security, quality, regulatory, ethics, and business controls. Policies are defined here; **Enforcements** bind them to assets or scopes so they apply in practice.

## Open Policies

1. Select **Know → Policies**.

Columns include **Policy**, kind, status / enabled signals, and **Updated**.

Use **Search…** to filter by name, kind, or description. The header shows a policy count.

## Create a policy

1. Click **New policy**.
2. Complete the form and click **Create**.

| Field | Notes |

| **Name** | Required |
| **Kind** | `access`, `masking`, `retention`, `ethics`, `privacy`, `security`, `quality`, `regulatory`, or `business` |
| **Description** | What the policy requires |
| **Criticality** | `low`, `medium`, `high`, or `critical` |
| **Policy type** | Optional free-text subtype |
| **Status** | `draft`, `active`, or `deprecated` |
| **Enabled** | Switch — when off, the policy is stored but not treated as in force |

Empty list: **No policies yet** — *Create a policy to govern access, masking, or business rules.*\
No search hits: **No matching policies**.

## How policies connect to the rest of Know

| Surface | Relationship |
| - | - |
| **Tags** | Catalog assets tagged with related labels; policies may be associated by tag |
| **Enforcements** | Attach a policy to a specific asset or scope (**Know → More → Enforcements**) |
| **Catalog** | Operators see policy context when inspecting tagged assets |
